I lay in bed that night, unable to sleep. It was late and it had been a long day.

Erica and I had got back to the penthouse before Jack had woken up from his nap. Most of the afternoon the two of them had been hanging out in the lounge, Jack playing with his new toys and Erica keeping him company.

Watching the two of them like that, it had got me thinking.

When I was a young boy, I had been sure that I would have a large family. I’d dreamed of it.

I’d happily imagined what my life was going to be like when I was an adult, and it was always the same thing - a beautiful wife that loved me, and a whole army of kids. I was going to live in the house where I had grown up in Connecticut, just outside Darien.

I used to have this picture in my head, of my children; all different ages, running on the big lawn, climbing the trees in the woods, playing with suits of armor in the Long Hall.

I wanted to share with my kids all the joy that I had growing up in that house.

But, life didn’t work out the way I expected.

I’d given up those dreams of having a family years ago. I was sure that I was going to spend my life alone.

I rolled over in bed, looking at the cold, empty space next to me. I wanted Erica to be there. Instead, she was down the hallway, much too far away from me.

It was such a waste. I was only going to have her with me for a short time, I should be savoring every second, not still pining for her when she was living in my penthouse. Throwing the covers back, I got out of bed and made my way by the light coming in through the window, I was determined to go and fetch her.

As I walked down the hallway, I heard a gentle, melodic whispering. I stopped, straining my ears to hear what was making that sound. I recognized it as Erica’s voice, but I’d never heard her make sounds like that before.

Placing my feet carefully, so that I wouldn’t make a sound as I moved, I went down the hallway. Jack’s bedroom door was ajar and as I got closer I could hear that Erica was singing Jack a lullaby. Her voice was so quiet that it wasn’t really a song, more like a whisper with a hint of a tune. There was a night light in his bedroom and it’s dim light came out into the hallway.

I opened the door slowly, watching as the mother of my child sang our son to sleep, sitting on his bed and stroking his hair. Seeing that made me freeze, rooted to the spot. The family that I had dreamed of as a kid, the one thing that I’d given up all hope for because I thought I’d never achieve it - that family already existed and they were right here in front of me.
